Why the 2026 VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport Win on Safety

December 19th, 2025 by

Don’t you know someone who avoids driving on some roads and conditions or at night because they just don’t feel safe? Automakers have been delivering on safety with superb new technology and structural improvements. But some vehicles are just safer than others. Good examples of maximum safety are the Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport midsize SUVs.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport have earned the insurance industry’s top safety award, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s TOP SAFETY PICK+. It’s also worth noting that they also won Five Stars out of five for Overall Safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

What Does TOP SAFETY PICK+ Mean?

The IIHS tests have four levels: Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor. To earn the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, the 2026 VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport had to earn a “good” rating on three measures of crashworthiness: small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side tests. Add acceptable or good ratings for headlights (standard equipment on all trims), and acceptable or good ratings on the pedestrian front crash prevention test.

What Makes the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport Winners

The Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance technology is built in to every 2026 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models as standard equipment. The whole idea behind IQ.DRIVE is to make driving easier and safer for modern families on busy streets and highways with features including:

  • Capacitive Steering Wheel
  • Front and Rear Radar
  • Front Camera
  • Travel Assist (semi-automatic driving assistance)
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Active Side Assist blind spot monitoring
  • Rear Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control w/stop & go
  • Lane Keeping System

Those features help protect your safety. For driver convenience the two Atlas models also have standard Exit Warning, Light Assist highbeam control. Available features include Park Distance Control, Park Assist, Dynamic Road Sign Display, Head-up Display, and an overhead view camera.
