Why Car and Driver Put Six VW Models on Its 2024 Automotive “Honor Roll”
Car and Driver – the prestigious automotive publication – says the 2024 Car and Driver Editor’s Choice list – is “the automotive world’s honor roll.” So we were excited to discover that six 2024 Volkswagen models made the list: the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Golf R, ID.4, Jetta GLI, Taos, and Tiguan.
The editors drove, tested and researched the attributes of almost 500 new vehicles, ranking them on a one-to-10 scale against its competitors in their segment. “These are the ones we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to our friends, families, and you,” they said.
The Golf GTI, came to the U.S. in 1983. Its eighth generation, available as one of the few manual transmission cars left, this “hot hatch” comes in three trims and, according to Car and Driver, “continues to thread the needle between fun, practicality and value…” SUVs and crossovers have been the market trend, but for sheer exhilaration, you can’t beat the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The Golf R also got high marks for its “Mighty turbo-four power, highly entertaining to drive, hatchback practicality.” The fifth generation Golf R has new premium features. You may want to hurry, since VW says this is the last model year for a manual transmission.
Volkswagen’s Jetta GLI continues to carry the small sedan banner. Volkswagen says “The Jetta has defined affordable German engineering for more than four decades … more than three of them as Volkswagen’s best-selling model.” It got a total redo just two years ago, and what wowed Car and Driver’s editors is that “The 228-hp Jetta GLI is one of the last fun-to-drive sedans left in the U.S. for under $30k.”
The VW Taos is a small but mighty SUV and Car and Driver’s editors loved its expansive interior space. Its base model S trim can also be had for less than $26k, including destination charge. All four 2024 Volkswagen Taos’s trim levels are loaded with technology and snappy design elements.
The editors lavishly praised the 2024 Tiguan for bringing “a decidedly European flavor to the crowded compact crossover segment…” Consumers have noticed, making the VW Tiguan VW’s best-selling model. All four of its trim levels – S, SE SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line – offer VW’s IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology standard. The 2024 Tiguan is a great value, starting (including destination charge) at around $30k.
The VW ID.4 gets a lot of buzz as the brand’s first all-electric SUV. Arriving at Volkswagen of Fairfield this spring, it will be available in three trim levels and either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. There are two battery choices: 62 kWh offering 280 hp, and 82 kWh providing about 330 hp. ID.4 was lauded by the Car and Driver editors for “Generous space and excellent comfort [that] make the ID.4 easy to live with.” Easy on the pocketbook, too, qualifying for a $7,500 federal tax credit because it’s made in the USA!
